About Me
My name is Carson Fox. This is my first time taking a ceramics class and it is a big challenge for me. I like ceramics because it a relaxing hour and I get to work freely. Here you will find my work and projects in sculpture&ceramics 1.
Pre-Instruction Vessel
Artist statement:
This is my pre-instruction vessel. I made a functional pot with designs on the sides and top. I started with clay and dug out the center until it was the right shape and added a coil on the side of the top of the pot. In this vessel I focused on texture, line and form. The point of the pot was to hold anything. I don't really like it because I don't think it is very cute. It serve its purpose, but I wouldn't want this in my room.

Abstract Tile: Unit 1
Artist statement:
This is my abstract tile. It is a slab with different shapes and designs on it. It uses coil, braids, arches, balls and more. In this project I focused on texture, shapes and lines. There is texture all over the slab, different shapes popping up and designs on them. For shapes and lines there is positive and negative space and different edges and outlines of the things slipped and scored on top. There was no purpose for this besides satisfaction and accomplishment. I like this project, I think that it is done well and looks cool. I like how there is so many different shapes and sizes but it all ties in together.

Clay Vessel: Unit 2
Artist statement:
This is my functional vessel and is meant to be hands holding something. I added many small details on the hands for depth and texture. It almost looks like two real hands. Auguste Rodin was my inspiration for this project. I saw some of his hand artwork before and came across it while I was researching for this project and the ideas flowed to me when this happened. I focused on texture in the hands, and I used form when I sculpted the hands. It is meant to be a plant or succulent holder. This has a little meaning to me because it is like we are holding a part of the earth (the plant) and I think that is very symbolic. I really like this project although I was hoping it would look better. I like it because the details are really good and it would be very cute decor.

Upcycled Art
Artist Statement:
This is a sculpture I created, I was inspired by the artist Tara Donovan. She made a sculpture where she stacked one million flash cards on top of each other to make mountain like sculptures. I first wanted to stack a bunch of cardboard pieces to make an endangered animal, I changed to making cuts and slits to make an animal, I then changed it to a tower. After change my mind multiple times I decided on taking cardboard pieces and hot glueing them to cardboard circles to make the armature an paper mache it. In the sculpture I focused on shape and form. The shape is supposed to be random and "messy" looking to represent the balances of life and recycling materials. This is meant to be a metaphor, all the recycled material builds up and affects the way we live our lives. Many people don't get affected or don't know how they are affected. My sculpture is meant to show how our life gets unbalanced with all this waste build up and that we can make a difference by recycling & reusing. I really like this sculpture because I think it looks really cool while having a meaning behind it.

Self Portrait
Artist Statement:
This sculpture is a mask painted black on the inside and has colorful designs on the outside. It has no particular pattern and is all random. It has many colors including light and dark pink, yellow, green, blue and more. I was inspired by Michelle Dickson. I had the idea prior to finding my artist and her work, but finding her just made me sure I wanted to do that for my project. Dickson's work was a mask that was all distorted and was an abstract piece. My original idea was to make a mask with pieces chipping away and the underneath being the part of you that nobody sees. My idea is still the same, while the sculpture is just more abstract. I put wire over a mask and paper mached over the wire. I did many layers and then painted white on the outside of the mask and black on the inside. I did colorful designs on the outside and left the inside plain black. In this sculpture I focused o n space, the space between each color and the space between each design. The inside of the mask represents the sad or ugly part of you and the outside represents the person you act to be around people. I personally do not like this project. I would not hang it up in my home or purchase it from someone. I loved my original idea but I had a very hard time making it happen so settled with this.
